When I walked into the brothel in Australia to discuss starting my sex work career, I had no idea about the projections I’d be encouraged to accept. In this case: my age.
Aging, or rather not aging, has humanity in a chokehold. We grasp at the latest skin care and cosmetic surgery to preserve the illusion of youth, spending half a million on a facelift (yes, Kris Jenner, I see you). In horror, old age is the ultimate monster. I remember watching The Shining as a child and not understanding the bathtub scene—the horror was that the beautiful woman turned into an old, naked one.
I just thought: Okay… she’s old… and? I still don't get the scare.
Then you have cult leaders who dress up underage marriage as "divine ordinance," when in reality, they're just predators with a good PR team.
So in a world that treats youth like the elixir of life, it’s no wonder this ideology bleeds into the sex work industry. During my interview at the brothel, the madam asked my age. I responded honestly. She looked shocked.
"I know," I said. "I have a baby face."
And even saying that is loaded. Baby face—as if aging is a homogenized process, and if you don't have wrinkles, you're suddenly infantilized. Maybe I don't have a baby face.
Maybe I just have a me face.
But she shook her head and said, "Your age is 24."
I looked at her, shocked. I've been 24. It was fun, but thank God I am not 24 anymore.
Still, I thought: How cool is it to be able to time travel and relive my youth?
On dates with clients in Australia, they absolutely believed I was 24. Some even thought I was er. But then I would open my mouth and converse. That’s where the suspicion crept in. Wait—you're well-traveled, you have a higher education, you're a parent. The math wasn't mathing for them.
And yet—what did it matter? Our entire meeting was a farce. He’s pretending he isn’t married with children. I’m pretending to be the 24-year-old of his dreams. The fantasy is fulfilled. The irony? I’m the only one in the room who knows she’s acting.
We live in a society that places grave importance on youth. But for me, as a Black American from poverty, I have always been happy to just be able to age. To reach a big age in my family is rare. My grandmother died . My mother died .
The fact is, I enjoy my age. I enjoy my intelligence. I enjoy that I have loads of life experience and wisdom that allows me to care for and nurture my clients from a space of genuine maturity.
It wasn't easy to get where I am. But I am here.
I am 36 years old. Soon to be 37.
And I love that for me.
